Doggystyle

On the auspicious occasion of 4/20 today, let me share my new found love for Snoop Doggy Dogg. Yes, I am about twenty years behind the zeitgeist. Two decades after the rest of the world.

I mean, I knew about Snoop Dogg and I had heard Gin and Juice. But I got sniffing about Snoop for real quite recently after seeing this meme float along.

I laughed and laughed and laughed and lit one up and laughed some more. Then I read Snoop’s IAmA on Reddit. And bang. I was a fan before I had heard any of his shit.

Sample this.

Why not 82

Why not indeed?

Every day nephew

And well, the inevitable,

Doggystyle

The whole Reddit IAmA is a brilliantly entertaining read. It was around somewhere there when I heard a fan reply something like Still hit it to Doggystyle after all these years, Snoop. Big fan.

And I thought hell, why not. I plugged Snoop’s first album Doggystyle into my ears about 3 days back, and haven’t unplugged it since.

Goddamit. I can’t fathom this back from 1992. There was some guy who said he was singing aloud to Snoop back in the day along with the other boys in school. And that borrowed memory stayed with me.

Twenty years on, I am listening to Lodi Dodi and getting blown away. Here, sample up.

Here’s an article I referred to for the 20 best hip-hop albums of all time (that is how I have discovered borrowed cultures all my life. Look at lists). The only hip hop album I had bought/heard (there was no option to listen to a tape before actually buying it. A lot of it was hit & trial with limited pocket money to spare) when I grew up back in small town India was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. And that was because of the grammies. I had such an instinctive distaste for the album that it put me off hip-hop and the grammies for a good number of years.

Then, much much later I delved into hip hop after having been obsessed with the Wire. Discovering Snoop after all that however, after all that gangster shit, and the crack dealers, and the violent bravado, to find a happy lil pothead pottering around to the same brand image twenty years after he started swinging was heart warming.

I know the rest of the stuff about Snoop too, the crack dealing, the murder charge, yes all that, but it’s happy to see him stick to weed. And he’s apparently quite the artist. Watch French Inhale. Such a beautifully shot video, this.

How can you not like someone who is publishing a songbook you can smoke?

Charming.

Tricia Kleinot designed this tour poster below for Snoop Dogg’s show and printed it on proper 80lbs hemp paper.
